Oswestry Ladies Choir Press Release

Oswestry Ladies Choir, a versatile female choir that rehearses in Gobowen will present its Spring Concert in Oswestry Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon May 12th at 3:00pm. “Opera for All”, a double -bill of Opera and Gilbert and Sullivan is a light- hearted selection of Choruses, Arias and Songs from operas by Verdi, Bizet, Puccini, Strauss, Wagner and Gilbert and Sullivan.

Singing the most coveted role in the opera “Carmen”, Catherine Benson the well- known opera singer from Shropshire will sing “Habanera” and with her final year student at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Abigail Baylis they will delight the audience with “The Flower Song” duet from the opera “Lakme”. Two showstoppers from a catalogue of well- loved operas, which includes “Brindisi” a drinking song from “La Traviata”, sung by a young tenor Daniel Marles.

The second half of the programme contains Choruses and Songs from three of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular and successful operas. “The Gondoliers” probably the sunniest opera with more Tra La La choruses than any other opera; “The Mikado” a comic opera set in Japan; “The Sorcerer” where love for all is a great obsession. Complete with happy, upbeat, romantic, witty and funny lyrics, this concert will be a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

The concert is conducted by Dawn Jaffray with resident accompanist Elizabeth Dobson.

Tickets £12 (children under 15 go FREE), including refreshments, are available from choir members and on the door.
